Running a Grand Opening (or Seasonal) Promotion That Actually Works

A practical framework for planning a promotion that drives real foot traffic, not just a discount nobody notices.

A grand opening or seasonal promotion only works if two things happen: enough people actually hear about it, and the offer itself gives them a real reason to show up now instead of whenever they eventually get around to it. Most promotions that fall flat are missing one of those two things, not both.

Start with the offer itself. A vague "grand opening special" doesn't move anyone; a specific, concrete offer does — a set discount, a free add-on, a clear deadline. The offer should be simple enough to say in one sentence and easy enough to actually redeem without a customer needing to remember a code or jump through steps.

Timing matters as much as the offer. A promotion needs a real deadline, not an open-ended one — "this week only" or "through the end of the month" gives people an actual reason to act now rather than filing the idea away and forgetting it. Without urgency, even a strong offer tends to get ignored.

Reach is the other half of the equation, and it's where a lot of promotions quietly underperform: a great offer that only reaches the people who already knew about you doesn't bring in new customers, it just gives a discount to people who were coming anyway. A grand opening in particular needs to reach people who've never heard of the business at all — which is exactly the gap something like an EDDM mailing to the surrounding neighborhood is built to close.

It also helps to give people more than one way to act on the promotion. Someone who sees a postcard might not be ready to call right then, but could scan a QR code and look at the business later that evening — having both a phone number and a real webpage on the same piece catches people at different points in their decision.

Finally, track what actually happens. Even something as simple as asking new customers how they heard about you, or watching redemption numbers on a specific offer, tells you whether the promotion worked well enough to run again — and which parts of it were the ones that actually mattered.
