Basic Cybersecurity Every Small Business Needs (Even a One-Person Shop)

The handful of real security basics that actually matter, even if you're not a tech person.

Small businesses often assume cybersecurity is a large-company problem, and that assumption is exactly backwards — small businesses are frequently targeted precisely because they tend to have weaker protections than a large company, while still holding real, valuable data: customer payment information, personal details, business banking access.

The single highest-impact, lowest-effort step is using strong, unique passwords for every business account, managed through a password manager rather than reused or written down. A huge share of real breaches trace back to a reused or weak password from an entirely unrelated account being guessed or leaked elsewhere.

Turning on two-factor authentication everywhere it's offered — especially for email, banking, and any account with access to customer data — adds a real, meaningful barrier even if a password is somehow compromised. It takes a few minutes to set up per account and blocks the large majority of automated attacks outright.

Keeping software updated matters more than it seems. A lot of real breaches exploit a known vulnerability in outdated software that already had a fix available — simply keeping computers, phones, and key business software updated closes a surprising number of the most common paths in.

Employee awareness is a genuinely underrated defense. A large share of real breaches start with a convincing fake email tricking someone into clicking a bad link or sharing a password — a short, direct conversation with any employee who has system access, teaching them to recognize the obvious warning signs, meaningfully reduces this risk at essentially no cost.

Finally, back up important data regularly, automatically, and to a location separate from the main system — protecting against not just a security breach but also simple hardware failure. A business that loses its customer and financial records with no backup is in a genuinely dire position regardless of how the loss happened.
